Sycuan's New Poker Room

I busted from a tournament earlier than I wanted to Friday night, so I headed out to see Sycuan's new poker room. Just took a few pics as there was still a lot of construction going on all around the casino. Anyways, poker room is pretty nice with several large televisions and an open setup with some nice architectural design. I ended up not even playing because when j arrived they had removed my name off of the list. it had been 62 mins and it stays on for an hour. lame. I waited another 30 mins, but they never started a new table.

As intimated at 1.20pm, we have just seen an absolutely monstrous pot here, and it's taken some time to write up. Here we have it:
Just when you get a little jaded with poker, a hand comes along to blow your mind again. It's just happened here in Los Angeles, where the overnight chip leader, Christopher Demaci, has just knocked out the man closest to him in the counts, Micah Raskin, within the first orbit. Needless to say, this was the biggest pot of the tournament so far, at more than 6 million. Raskin is gone, Demaci is in complete control, and this is what happened:
Raskin was slightly late getting to the table today and missed a couple of hands. He hadn't fully un-bagged his chips when he raised to 70,000 from the cut off and DeMaci three bet to 120,000 from the button. None of this was all that extraordinary - Raskin's bet size was consistent with how he was opening yesterday, and DeMaci has done an awful lot of three-betting in position.
Raskin called. Just before the flop came down, Joe Tehan reminded Raskin that he still had chips in his bag. "I know," said Raskin, and it might not have mattered too much had the following not then occurred. The flop came J♣T♣T♦ and Raskin checked. DeMaci counted out a bet of 181,000 and Raskin pretty much instantly announced a raise, to 400,000 straight.
He slid in four towers of blue chips to represent that raise, but DeMaci then wanted to know how much more he had. (It looked to the casual observer that Raskin was pretty-much all in because all his biggest chips were still concealed.)
"Can you stack his chips," asked DeMaci of the tournament staff. "I want to know how much he has." And then we were treated to the unusual sight of two men in suits stacking up huge piles of chips, with Raskin sitting in the middle of them, silent.

This continued as DeMaci called the raise, taking them to a A♠ turn. Raskin almost instantly announced that he was all in for what what eventually determined to be about 1.4 million. The men in suits stepped back, but now a huge crowd had surrounded the table, scenting a tournament-defining moment.
DeMaci was in agony. "This isn't a nit-roll," he said. "This can't be happening. There's no way this is happening." He looked back a few times at his cards. "There's no way this is happening. What do you guys think I have?" he asked the rail, but no one replied. "This could be the sickest one ever. I don't think I can pass."

Eventually, after a good five or six minutes, DeMaci called. He flipped over A♥T♠ for the turned boat. Raskin sheepishly showed 6♠6♣ for a huge bluff gone awry. The river was a blank.
In the aftermath, and as the players shook hands ahead of Raskin heading to the cage, DeMaci said: "The speech made me feel a lot better. He told me if I folded I'd still have chips."
None of the people on the rail had heard Raskin say that, but DeMaci did. The crucial snippet of information was missed by most, but heard, crucially, by the man who is now the clear, clear chip leader. He has more than six million and can't believe what just happened. Neither can anyone else.

Played local 2 table home tournament last night and it was actually pretty good. We started with 10k in chips at 25/50, so 200bbs. The first 3 levels were 20 minutes then they went to 15 minutes. I ended up playing pretty well and I was happy with all of my decisions. I busted out 6th when I pushed AJo utg for 22.5k at 1.5k/3k I to AQo. Neither if us improved and j was out. I played a local garage tournament last night and things went fairly well. I actually bubbled the money, finishing 5th when they payed out 4 places, sigh. Funny thing was when I moved tables, I see this kid with a lot of chips at the new table. He must have been the chip leader at that table or at least 2nd because there were two really big stacks. When I arrived at the table, I asked aloud who here was getting lucky and who was good. Now this is something that I rarely ever do, but I was in a talkative mood and I have been trying to be less serious and more friendly at the tables. Anyways, his response was, a firm, I'm good, while the other large stack said he was just lucky. The interesting part about this kid is that he looked about 15. Turns out, he was. Needless to say, he didn't hold on to those chips for too long due to a failed river all in bluff with air versus the biggest calling station in the game, lol. his looks reminded me of goboboy. athe classic ghostbusters shirt to boot.

He finished one 24-36 ounce Mtn Dew and popped open another. I was glad to see him later in the cash game where I was able to recover my tourney buy in and a bit more.

The drama began far sooner than the final table commenced, as things got a little testy near the money bubble when Matthew Marafioti complained to tournament officials about the payout structure. Marafioti was upset that less than 10 percent of the field was being paid, and he petitioned for more than just the final eight players to walk away with some cash. After relentless pressure, the chip leaders finally gave in and agreed to alter the structure so that 11 players would make the money. Marafioti was eliminated in 12th place.

This cracked me up. First because I could see myself trying to negotiate a deeper payout, but secondly because it would be my luck that the same thing would happen.

Played the 12+3 w/rb $2k guaranteed at the local Indian casino on
Sunday. Interesting how they have changed the structure a little and
started to guarantee the Sunday tournament in addition to the Saturday
now. You buyin for $15 and can rebuy for $5 right away and also any
time during the 1st level which I now 30 minutes. all other levels are
15 minutes. I rebought twice and did the double add on for a total
buyin of $35 and j started level two with 126bbs. Most ever in a local
casino tourney. Ended up fairly deep and busted 32nd when I shipped
AJo utg and was snapped called by QQ. I flopped the ace an even turned
a J, but the river Q sealed my fate. Had fun though, first because I
was hyper loose in the rb period and second because I could play a
little more than usual, but the levels are still horrible when it goes
feom 200/400 to 500/1000. WTF? why not add at least 300/600 OR 400/800?

I finally took some time to watch the 2nd episode of "From Busto to Robusto". This one features Andrew Robl and his story about his life in poker. It is shot and edited pretty well with the exception of a few minor things. I saw the boom microphone at one point and a few other small things could have been better, but fairly good for a low budget piece.

One of the things that surprised me the most was the amount of acne that Andrew has and how NOT good that looks in HD. He does seem to have a pretty hot girlfriend though. Another thing is that it definitely appears that Victory Poker and PlayerGPS had a major contribution to the financial side of this production, as they are mentioned and the Victory Poker team is featured for several minutes during the film.

Headed up to Pechanga Indian Casino yesterday to play in their $100 + 30, 20k guaranteed NLHE tournament. This tournament had a pretty good structure and great starting chips, so it was nice for once to play a REAL tournament. I have only played at Pechanga a few times, but they have a pretty nice (and large) poker room. I think I played just 1 daily tournament there and some low limit, limit poker (2/4) a LONG time ago, which I recall was a classic river showdown festival, as you might think.

Anyway...my buddy Mizzark619 and I headed up there in the pouring rain and I mean POURING RAIN! We had to slow down to as little as 15-20mph on the freeway because we literally could not see 5 feet in front of us. Well, as the saying goes, one must endure pain sometimes to achieve pleasure. I played well, ran well, didn't get unlucky and shipped an 18 way chop of $1627, -$50 to the chip leader, so $1578 net. Not bad for about 8.5 hours of work. I was extremely happy with the result since it was better than 6th place money.

You may notice that the image only shows 13 one hundred dollar bills, this is because I traded 15% with Mizzark619, so it ended up great for both of us. He got his buy-in back plus a hundo.

I spent most of the tournament studying my opponents closely and using my reads to make the best decision for each situation, which is why playing poker is clearly a game of skill.
